SONG OF THE WEEK: “Ya Gotta Care (SimpleMindFunk Mix)”
…One day I had the misfortune to overhear a chattering group of friends—smart, good-looking, healthy, and employed “beautiful people.” They were talking down about the less fortunate in our world, with one of them saying, “I just don’t care about those (expletives).” That disturbed and disappointed me—any one of us could lose our health, income, looks etc. at any time. First I judged myself, realizing that maybe I’ve talked trash, too. Second, I realized that I can’t fix everything, but I can pay attention, be mindful, and care enough to catch things before they go haywire and come back on me: “Ya gotta care, because someday you’re gonna wish someone cared about you.”
“Whoever said we shouldn’t care one for another
Trivial care make you lose your hair and forget about the other…”
This was co-written with my friend and musical mentor, the late Jeff Lloyd.
The song went through remixes and remakes—this version was recorded in the hipster city of Knoxville TN for my DOOR IN THE WATER album. The studio there let me use Yamaha DX7 keyboards they’d tech’d for The Jacksons “Victory” tour (those are Michael Jackson’s sounds on there). On a cosmic jukebox this would play between Janet Jackson, Isley Brothers, Level 42, Billy Preston, and Simple Minds.
