As we pass another 4th of July, it's always good to take stock of what America means. What does America mean to you? Where and how do you fit in? Here’s one point of view:
SONG OF THE WEEK—“Woody Guthrie's America”
Woody Guthrie said, "I hate a song that makes you think that you are not any good. I hate a song that makes you think that you are just born to lose. Bound to lose. No good to nobody. No good for nothing. Because you are too old or too young or too fat or too slim or too ugly or too this or too that." That’s one way to look at America, through the lens of a song.
On that note, I was contacted by Seth Olinsky (of the furry freaky psychedelic prog-gy folk band Akron/Family) to cover this song, which he wrote. He launched a worldwide project for a posse of musicians, non-musicians, artists, actors & actresses, etcetera, to record their own takes of this song (which Seth posted on a website). For my arrangement, I "took it to church" in a Beach Boys style (circa HOLLAND), zipping off the piano and all the vocals in a few takes at Mind’s Eye Studio (with Scott Francis at the board). Thank you for listening. Feedback welcome.
