SUNDAY MUSIC VIDEO MATINEE: Donovan’s “Jennifer Juniper” as “The Cleverly Brothers” w/Mike Kanski, live in Florida ...Mike and I sprang out of Avis PA. We’ve known one another since 1967, when Donovan first recorded this song as a tribute to Jenny Boyd and a boutique she ran called Juniper.
Donovan is one of many mutual interests Mike and I share. I remain close to him and his brothers, David, Gary, and Steve—men who’ve fed my soul. Their home was the village hipster tea shoppe, a friendly neighborhood discovery center for cool radio, media, and hairstyles for a pre-teen me. I’ve since recorded and played music around the world, with all kinds of musicians famous and not, in diverse venues from the Royal Albert Hall to little churches to Las Vegas to temples in India to The Fillmore to prisons to Disney to biker bars, but my heart goes back to those colorful times at the Kanski’s.
Mike was an older brother figure as he set the bar for action plans. He was the first person I knew who, before my eyes, wrote an original song—and demo’d it even! When Mike got a real job and saved up for a quality guitar, I was impressed. If Mike said a record was good, I’d promptly go check it out. Much of his record collection featured British Invasion pop/rock, and that influenced my musical development.
This 2010 concert is the only document of us performing together in public. The video was made off-the-cuff in a middlingly-lit coffee house. To preserve the “historic occasion,” I took it to a studio for audio clean-up and colorization to give it a lo-fi “Yellow Submarine” style animation. Enjoy it for my intention and expression of gratitude to my Kanski friends. Thank you for tuning in.
