SONG OF THE WEEK: “Music Up Inside of Me”
— April is National Child Abuse Awareness Month. What is my musical connection to that?
Music goes places that language and science can’t explain, into the mind and into the soul. I’ve performed in places from the Royal Albert Hall to The Fillmore to Disney to Caribbean cruise ships to churches to temples in India to prisons to Las Vegas to assisted living homes to biker bars to Japanese nightclubs to subway stations to picnics and, yes! It’s true! I can testify!
Unresolved junk from childhood manifests into forms of addiction and personality disorder—always falling off the daily tightrope, never feeling safe. Compulsive behavior goes on because of unresolved emotional and spiritual trauma that happened early in life. We hear about that, but we don’t know what to do—until we hand it over to God. That is my experience. I wanted to heal, but (until recent years) didn’t have “the tools” to let the healing happen. For me, music has always been one of those “tools.” Music has given me healing, safety, and sustenance in more ways that I can describe. Playing it, creating it, listening to it, talking about it…this is medicinal for me.
This song is an acoustic refraction on some Motown lyrics, mixing it up with worship metaphors by the prophet Zephaniah.
One day I may re-do it with a “symphonic soul” arrangement. Enjoy (feedback welcome):
