“If I could say a prayer for every lip that was split, If I could write a song for every time I was told to quit…”
SATURDAY MUSIC VIDEO MATINEE: “Love That’s Here to Stay”—I was on the Caribbean island of Eleuthera, taking a walk on a long, quiet highway. I ventured upon an abandoned church that is now a hurricane-blasted shell. There was something calmly defiant and timeless about that place, and it informed this song
.
“The world is rough and crazy, and hearts don’t get their lift
You hear bad news about the people fallin’ for some grift
But love has a way of mending you when you’re worn and ripped
And I thank you for coming here and giving me a gift
You build me up from clay, with the smile you send my way
And the love that’s here to stay…”
The title is an intentional echo on the George & Ira Gershwin song, "Love is Here to Stay." My lyrics draw from conversations overheard in public from people discussing their problems and how they rose above + a C.S. Lewis essay on the parasitism of evil ("...but evil cannot stand alone in the blaze of a glorious light”). I re-worked the bass line from "The Model" by Kraftwerk, then built a flamenco-glam rock music bed around it. On a cosmic jukebox, it would playlist between T. Rex, David Bowie, Mick Ronson, and tango legend Carlos Gardel.
