MY SONG OF THE WEEK “It’s Going to be Different Today” —From my heart to your ears and beyond, a song of hope and strength…
The first 2 verses are about regrets, losing powers I thought I had, and awakening from my own self-delusion. There’s a Thin Man who lost his clothes in a theatre filled with ghosts.
Then comes a Cynosure, a femme fatale who lost her powers to manipulate and bewitch.
I once ran in a life with such characters, but I bottomed out, and it was time for be to page The Book of Hours (referencing a medieval prayer book, but I also learned about it from David Bowie’s 1999 HOURS album).
Then the choruses burst in with the will to be different, to lose the past, rise above with God’s strength and hope, and dance away into the sun. By the 3rd verse I’ve been restored in faith, like a child who has no regrets, climbing hills with happy energy, able to see miracles waiting on the hilltop.
I wrote this song while walking down a busy city street, letting the chords and melody unwrap themselves long enough for me to get home and demo it. On a cosmic jukebox this song would play between Badfinger, David Bowie, and Neil Finn (Crowded House, Split Enz). This take was recorded with my old Florida friend Mark Jones on drums. All the work was done at Tape Vault Studio in San Francisco under the wand of Chris von Sneidern.
