This could be a commercial for the dental industry, but the title was really inspired by SMILE-era Beach Boys.
I wrote it on a Saturday night after a hard stressful week. I’d just finishing opening for a punk band at a theatre in California. As I sat backstage in contemplation, I closed my eyes and played back smiling faces of people who’d encouraged me over the years…
…then I quickly wrote this song (despite the din from the stage).
On a cosmic jukebox it would play between Sting and Dennis Wilson. I’ve re-recorded this song a few ways—this version was mixed by Tim Breon and I was blessed to borrow a Gibson Chet Atkins SST guitar for the session.
