FRIDAY FLASHBACK “Where are you Tonight?” by The Pick-Ups
…The Pick-Ups are a celebrated Americana rock band from Wilkes-Barre PA. They are fronted by singer-songwriter Don Shappelle, an activist and former member of Pete Seeger’s folk music project, The Hudson River Sloop Singers. This 1994 track was intended to be a deep album cut, but at the time we joked that it sounded like Boyce & Hart song written for Paul Revere & The Raiders or The Monkees (we almost called Davy Jones in to play tambourine). It was written by Don, and I had the privilege of producing (and adding 12-string guitars) on this track. The track was mixed by Rusty Richards (Julie Miller, Brian Wilson). On a cosmic jukebox this song would play next to Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, and The Yardbirds. Meanwhile, Don and The Pick-Ups are still in circulation…
