Friday Flashback: "Daydream Believer" live with orchestra

FRIDAY FLASHBACK “Daydream Believer” live with orchestra…
Today the Wayback Machine lands in Pittsburgh PA, sometime in May 2010. Davy Jones (Monkees) summoned me and my blue Gibson acoustic guitar to join him in a taping for PBS-TV special. He bought me a blue Geoffrey Beene silk tie “to go with my guitar,” and, as a musician, I was challenged as I played guitar on songs that I usually played bass or keyboards on. He said, “Don’t worry John. It’s all tinsel and glitter.
”
When we arrived at Benedum Theatre, I was surprised to find we were on a taping assembly line with Chad & Jeremy, Jackie DeShannon (who MC’d), Gary Lewis & The Playboys, Roger McGuinn, The Miracles, Paul Revere & The Raiders, and others. It was like “old home week” as I ran into friends from the road (shout out to drummer Mike Arturi) and made new friends. Our full set included “Daydream Believer,” “Little Bit Me Little Bit You,” “Valleri,” “Girl” and “I’m Not Your Steppin’ Stone” in a cameo with Paul Revere & The Raiders. PBS broadcasted the full set only once in 2011—you can hear the whole show (+ more rare Davy Jones symphony pops concert selections) in a VIP-only streaming album here:
