ALBUM OF THE MONTH: SPACE ODDITY / WE’RE GETTING CLOSER TO THE SUN—
...Many have assumed that David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” is a dystopian story of futility and failure, but Bowie’s oeuvre point to a more open ending that involves his spiritual quest—a pursuit of God’s heart in the cosmos, inner and outer. Bowie revitalized the Major Tom character as a conflicted man, “…Strung out on heaven’s high, making an all-time low,” seeking redemption from his own foibles while expressing awe at the vast potential of creation, even into Bowie’s final BLACKSTAR album.
“Space Oddity” reached me deeply when I was a kid, echoing my escapism into sci-fi books, watching Star Trek TV reruns, and asking “God questions.” Years passed and I became a singer on my own, adding Bowie songs to my solo set. My faithful remake of “Space Oddity” includes Mellotron, Stylophone, and all. It’s a touchstone recording for the childlike faith and outer space themes in my new songs. Personnel on this download album includes Beyondo a.k.a. Eric Biondo (Angelique Kidjo, Monkees), Uma Robin Mackey, Robert Matthew Powell, Prairie Prince (Todd Rundgren, Tubes), Chris von Sneidern, and Mike Garson, David Bowie’s pianist. Your download of this album will help me fund the finish of my next album, WE’RE GETTING CLOSER TO THE SUN. God bless you!
